Apartheid

O Apartheid foi um regime de segregação racial adotado de 1948 a 1994 pelos sucessivos governos do Partido Nacional na África do Sul, no qual os direitos da maioria dos habitantes foram cerceados pelo governo formado pela minoria branca. A política de segregação racial foi oficializada em 1948, com a chegada do Novo Partido Nacional (NNP) ao poder. O apartheid não permitia o acesso dos negros às urnas e os proibia de adquirir terras na maior parte do país, obrigando-os a viver em zonas residenciais segregadas, uma espécie de confinamento geográfico. 
A oposição ao apartheid teve início de forma mais intensa na década de 1950, quando o Congresso Nacional Africano (CNA), organização negra criada em 1912, lançou uma desobediência civil. Em 1960, a polícia matou 67 negros que participavam de uma manifestação. O Massacre de Sharpeville, como ficou conhecido, provocou protestos em diversas partes do mundo. Como consequência, a CNA foi declarada ilegal e seu líder, Nelson Mandela, foi preso em 1962 e condenado à prisão perpétua.

Apartheid was a system of racial segregation adopted from 1948 to 1994 by successive National Party Governments in South Africa, in which the rights of the majority of the inhabitants were curtailed by the Government formed by the white minority. The policy of racial segregation was established in 1948, with the arrival of the new national party (NNP) to power. 
Apartheid did not allow the access of blacks to the polls and prohibited from acquiring land in most parts of the country, forcing them to live in segregated residential areas, a species geographical containment. The opposition to apartheid began more intensely in the Decade of 1950, when the African National Congress (ANC), black organization founded in 1912, launched a civil disobedience. In 1960, the police killed 67 blacks who participated in a demonstration. The Sharpeville Massacre, as it became known, caused protests in various parts of the world. As a result, the ANC was declared illegal and its leader, Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
